If you find yourself engaging in a negative monologue in your mind, you are struggling with your inner critic. Your inner critic is responsible for making you feel worthless, stupid, small, a loser and incapable. It is the voice that makes you feel bad about yourself and blames you for everything that goes wrong in your life and discredits you for any positive moments and/or experiences.
This voice creates shame, self-doubt and worthlessness. It’s origins are from childhood, where a child internalized the critical messages (s)he took in as one was growing up. If your childhood was mostly accompanied by adults that were supportive and affirming, the inner critic in your head will be fairly insignificant. However, if the majority of the main adults in your life were critical you are likely to have a powerful inner critic.
You may be wondering, “How do I eliminate this inner critic?” The first step in getting rid of this hyper-critical voice within you is to recognize that it is there. We all have a stream of consciousness in which we are constantly thinking and processing information. That inner monologue is different from the inner critic which makes us feel bad about ourselves.
The second step is to understand that the inner critic not an important part of your true self. It is similar to an emotional parasite that resides in your mind and feeds off your negative emotions and releases toxins into your mind.
The third step toward eliminating the inner critic is understanding that it is harmful to your well-being and prevents you from accepting and loving your authentic self. You will not benefit from an inner voice that demands perfection, criticizes your every move, fills you with anxiety and burdens you with guilt. Let these go as they do not serve a positive function in your life.
The inner critic is similar to an abusive partner. The inner critic as an abusive partner tells you or makes you feel that you are useless, worthless, and undeserving of love or respect. It says that you are incapable of succeeding at anything you try and that without it, you are a failure.
The more you believe these untruths, the longer you stay imprisoned in the vicious cycle of feeling worthless and shameful. The only way to eliminate the inner critic is to let the negative thoughts go and replace them with self-acceptance and self-love while pursuing your personal growth directed goals.
