Do you find it difficult to acknowledge the unhealthy behaviors in others? If this is your experience in relationships, you may be setting yourself up to be hurt and disappointed. Individuals whom you may be surrounded with may not share the same values of honesty, integrity and kindness. Individuals who are often afraid to see others as capable of bad behavior frequently have a history of painful experiences in their own childhood.
Children struggle accepting that their parents or guardians could be cruel, manipulative, selfish or neglectful. It is very difficult for a child’s psyche to recognize that the people who are supposed to love them, care for them and protect them are unable to love them or are engaging in toxic behaviors. Childhood experiences of loss or disappointment can leave them feeling vulnerable. Any disappointment in the present is too painful, so it is easier to ignore or deny the truth about the people in their adult lives who may still be one’s parents, friends or romantic partners.
The reality is that people are indeed, capable of selfish, manipulative and cruel behavior even if they are your parents, friends or lover. Some individuals lack a conscience, a sense of responsibility, empathy or remorse. These individuals are deliberately cruel. Then there are those who do not care enough to engage in honest, integrity, responsible or kind behavior.
If you deny the possibility that someone could be hurtful regardless of your relationship to that person, you put yourself and your loved ones at great risk. Facing this truth is empowering and will enable you to make better decisions and assert healthy boundaries with unhealthy individuals. It may be disappointing and disillusioning to face the truth about someone’s hurtful behaviors. However it helps to protect yourself and those you love from future pain and disappointment.
