Infidelity plagues many relationships. Reasons can differ for individuals and couples. Various causes will be explored and provide some insight into this devastating betrayal. Reasons some individuals are unfaithful is that they are not satisfied in their relationship. Perhaps they are not in love with their partners. They may be staying in the relationship because they are uncertain of how to get out, or maybe their needs are not being met in the relationship.
The second reason why individuals are unfaithful is that they have emotional or psychological problems that make it difficult for them to have a sense of emotional or sexual intimacy with their partners or to make a true commitment. They want to be honorable; although their insecurities, fears, self-doubt, false beliefs about love and commitment or a deep sense of inadequacy make them vulnerable to infidelity.
Sometimes individuals are terrified of abandonment or rejection and falsely believe that they will be betrayed. They sabotage their relationship as a pre-emptive strike, or to alleviate their anxiety around when the “inevitable” disappointment they believe will occur.
Another reason why individuals are unfaithful is that they do not value faithfulness, and have no intention of being monogamous. Fortunately, this represents a minority of people. These individuals are not interested in monogamy and will not respond to their partner’s needs or respect their feelings.
The fourth reason why individuals are unfaithful is that they have a sex addiction. They might not want to cheat, but they do so anyway. This is a serious problem which requires intensive therapy, and without treatment, nothing will change.
Regardless of the reason, it is important to explore the dynamic in the relationship that could be contributing to the problem of infidelity and make choices that value both partners and the relationship as a whole. Some relationships can be salvaged and strengthened as a result of the infidelity while others may be better off dissolved.
