Whole-hearted living allows people to live authentically and joyfully. It allows individuals to live in balance with their thoughts and emotions. It also allows one’s heart to lead the way in decision making and actions. It does not equate to letting unchecked feelings govern your life. It also means, not letting unexpressed feelings limit your interaction and connection with others.
Whole-hearted living or heart-based living can be condensed into 3 simple steps: Acknowledge, Learn, and Relax.
Acknowledging begins with a choice to go into the heart-based feelings and explore what is felt. When we acknowledge what is in our hearts, we tend to make wiser and more compassionate decisions. Consequently, we live more authentically, peaceful and connected lives.
As we acknowledge our feelings we start to explore the emotions locked inside the heart. This does not mean re-experiencing the traumas of the past. Rather it is to acknowledge that your heart had to shut down in the past as a way of dealing with the hurts all humans experience to one extent or another. In acknowledging the feelings locked in the heart, we are really allowing the awareness of feelings and emotions to surface. We can ask “what’s in my heart?”
The second step to heart-based living is to tune into the feelings behind what the heart is saying, “What is my heart telling me?” We do this by feeling whatever emotion we have and accepting the feeling without judgment no matter what it is.
Learning to relax and exist playfully is essential. Learning to embrace life and its gifts is vital. Children and animals have this mastered as they allow their hearts to guide them in the present moment. We commit to seeing the beauty and joy, even if it is a small experience, such as a flower or the smile of a loved one. Heart-based living is a balanced place and in that sacred space we make room for more joy and peace by embracing the wisdom of the heart.
