Parents often wonder how they should approach the mystical concept of Santa since it is heavily ingrained in our culture. Experts suggest that parents should allow their children to believe in the jolly idea of Santa Claus as long as they choose. Experts have not determined a cut off age where children should discontinue believing in Santa. As children develop cognitively, they will on their own realize the myth behind Santa.
Given that this magical belief in Santa makes the holiday very exciting for children, it is recommended that children be allowed to enjoy this special period in their development and allow the children to outgrow the idea on their own. Children who believe in Santa have more fun with the holiday. If parents tell their children that Santa doesn’t exist, it could lesson the enjoyment of the season!
As children’s logic progresses, children will naturally begin to question the existence of Santa and will come to realize that his existence is impossible. This transition could last a few years where they question the belief of Santa. Parents can ask open ended questions about Santa such as “What do you think about Santa?”
If parents do not want to promote the magical belief in Santa, they can surround themselves with like-minded friends and family. This is beneficial because children tend to absorb information that people around them believe.
TIP: Regardless which belief system a family endorses, it is important to teach your child that other children and families may have different beliefs regarding Santa.
It is hoped that parents can use this opportunity to not only create a sense of joy and magic during the holiday season and also to teach their children the importance of respecting differences in how others celebrate the holidays.
