Each of us have experienced positive and negative relationships regardless of how brief or long those relationship have been. As a result of our accumulated experiences we devise relationship templates in which we apply to future relationships. Along the way we develop attitudes and behaviors that create our relationship template. The relationship templates that we adopt may or may not be conducive to our current relationships.
For some individuals, when their early relationships were not secure, trusting, safe, nurturing, stable, consistent and loving; their attachment template to others becomes unhealthy. They oftentimes find themselves in relationships where they or their partners are unavailable emotionally or too clingy. Such behaviors and unhealthy thoughts about relationships that drive those behaviors perpetuate problems within relationships.
If a person is insecure, has difficulty with trust or being vulnerable because of their past, it is pertinent that they deal with their emotional baggage. Otherwise, this will inevitably poison and ruin the relationship. If the security, trust and vulnerability is not worked through, it will be repeated in future relationships and the outcomes will be the same: loneliness.
We all want a loving, secure and satisfying relationship. However, if we cannot be in a loving relationship with ourselves, how can we give that to another. It is vital to be honest with oneself and actively work toward self-love and compassion. Then we can give this gift to another. When we love ourselves we engage in healthy behaviors and boundaries. We learn to take risks in secure and healthy relationships to deepen our love and learn to let go of toxic relationships which keep us broken. Love yourself so you can be the best version of yourself in your current relationship.
