Humans are inherently seeking happiness. Yet research suggests that humans poorly predict what will make them happy. The consequence of this is that humans pursue happiness in a way that does not lead to that which they are seeking. Individuals often inaccurately assume that material possessions, money, power, a promotion or person can make them happy. They seek the happiness outside themselves. While those situations can lead to temporary happiness, they will not result in a sense of joy that can be accessed and maintained continuously. Happiness must come from within and it can be practiced utilizing various changes in mindset.
An important part to attaining happiness is self-acceptance. It means approving of yourself while at the same time trying to be your very best. In addition, happiness occurs when we practice compassion which is kindness to self and others. Kindness leads to an open heart and a sense of joy. It is also imperative to practice gratitude. Having a sense of thankfulness for the positive aspects of one’s life produces happiness. When we are grateful we focus our attention and energy on areas of our life that are going well. Where we choose to focus our attention impacts how we think and feel. When we focus on the positive, we feel positive and expect positive outcomes.
