Letting go is not about being disempowered or weak. It is a form of surrender in which we go with the flow, trust what is, and being open to change. Learning to let go or surrender allows us to be present, engage in joyful living, experience love and gratitude, and release destructive people and behavior patterns. Learning to let go can be a very empowering experience. Listed below are tips on how to surrender and engage in whole-hearted living.
1. Recognize not everything is within one’s control.
Being a control freak creates tension and stress. Surrendered people understand that they cannot control everything around them. They accept circumstances as they are and focus on what they can modify which is the manner in which they perceive a situation. Our perspective plays the largest role in our joy or suffering. When we adopt a healthy perspective life becomes more enjoyable.
2. Comfort with the unknown.
Being rigid creates anxiety. It is vital that we let go of trying to control the future and learn to exist in the unknown. We are unable to predict everything that will happen. Instead go with the flow, be flexible and find moments of comfort or excitement in novelty. Be open to experience and the unknown.
3. Stress Management.
It is easy to become frantic and distressed when life throws obstacles our way. Try learning healthy coping mechanisms such as pausing, deep breathing and being an observer of what is occurring rather than a victim of circumstance. When we observe we can formulate a proper and empowering response to a situation rather than having a knee jerk reaction which can hurt us later.
Learning to let go allows us to be present and mindful and take a proactive approach to life. It gives us the opportunity to let go of anxiety, depression and anger and as a result, take charge of our lives.
