Happiness is a conscious choice in which individuals learn to refine and create for themselves. No one can create happiness for you; just as you cannot create happiness for another. There will always be aspects in our life that are not ideal. Happiness is not an objective reality as it is a subjective decision.
When individuals are negative and critical in their behavior; they have become invested in seeing only what is wrong. Sadly, this robs them of opportunities to experience joy and gratitude. Children and pets are one of the greatest lessons in happiness, constantly challenging us to enjoy the moment (to be fully present), as the next one will not be the same. Their spirits are free and they are able to accept their circumstances as they are without judgment.
Learning to celebrate the good while it is happening it vital. Learning to feel gratitude for simple pleasures has beneficial and positive outcomes to our well-being. Happiness is not determined by circumstances. Happiness is what happens when you intentionally decide to be happy.
Gratitude is essential to happiness. Developing a grateful attitude–knowing that every time we arrive somewhere safely, every time our children greet us with a smile, every time we get out of bed and can take a deep breath and go out for a walk, we have something to be happy about–that is the essence of a happy existence. Happiness is a muscle we must use, or it will atrophy away.
Whatever we focus on is bound to expand. Where we see the negative, we call forth more negative. And where we see the positive, we call forth more positive.
